How do some students earn so many stickers? Are they cheating?

Probably not, as there aren't really any opportunities to cheat, other than guessing at answers, and the games are designed to discourage guessing. Many top players score big in the bonus "wheel-type" games (TEN WHEELS, FACTORS, 24 WHEELS and FRACTION WHEELS) because these games offer players the opportunity to earn thousands of stickers.
How it works: If you complete all 8 Skill Sets, you will earn 800 credits per game. If you score a maximum 6 stickers for each round of play, you can earn 4,800 stickers for that game. Multiply that across the four wheel-type games, and you could earn almost 20,000 stickers! If you rush and earn only 3 stickers per round of play, you will only earn half the potential stickers. Patience is key! |

hi, mathteach1. I have had a couple top 10 players in the last two years and I can tell you they aren't cheating. They love the game. They are 'addicted' and play constantly - every night for hours. It is like Nintendo for most kids-- only thankfully they are learning something! And they never run out of wheels!

I agree with what teach567 replied. Having been actively involved in First in Math for all of the years since it was developed, I can tell you that that these high scoring students, teams, and schools are so highly motivated that they earn those stickers honestly....putting hours of time in to achieve their goals.
As the moderator stated, the biggest scores come from playing the wheel games: ten wheels, fraction wheels, 24 wheels, etc. For example, if a child finishes 5 skill sets, they get 500 credits, meaning that they can play each of the wheel games 5 times. If they are doing just ten wheels (where all four numbers in the wheel must add up to the number ten), and get the highest number of stickers for the game (which is 6), then they can earn 3,000 stickers just by using all of their credits. Those students who have completed 8 skill sets can come up with a potential 4,800 stickers just by using all of their credits and getting the maximum number of stickers. This is the sticker count just for using all of the credits in one of the wheel games.! These are some of my students' favorite games, and the more that they play, they learn more and more strategies to help them become more successful and earn the maximum sticker count. I can tell you from personal experience that I monitor progress carefully and there really isn't a way that they can earn stickers without earning them honestly. By becoming your students' biggest supporter and cheerleader, you can consistently motivate them to set those goals for themselves and, by giving certificates consistently, they get even more excited about their progress. The certificates are all done for you and all you have to do it download them, fill in the child's name and present it in class with lots of fanfare! These students earn high scores because they are so engaged and excited to see their progress throughout the year. Good luck to you and your team, and I know that you will see progress! |

We are not aware of any "cheating schemes". Can you be more specific
about which games your students are currently using? In order to fully investigate whether this could be happening, you will need to supply us with team info, including IDs/Passwords of the kids you think are cheating.
DO NOT publish this information here in the Forum, instead please write to help@firstinmath.com, or better yet, fill out the Request Tech Assistance form (available through a link on your TL home page). If you are a student who thinks someone else in your class is cheating, bring it to your Team Leader's attention, and they can contact FIM. This forum is for educators only. |
