I'm trying to get our school to use First in Math in place of a traditional summer math packet.  The concern is what to tell the students they have to do...should they earn a certain number of stickers or complete a certain number of activities?  Anyone have any recommendations of how they have used it in their classes?

What you ask students to do depends on the school’s objectives for summer schools students. If you are focused on basic skill improvement, I would suggest students finish both whole number gyms; and get 85% or 95% correct on the JTF module.

Know & Show appropriate for the grade can also be a goal. The students can then choose other areas to work on – so they take ownership.

Thank you for the response.  I appreciate your insight.  What about the stickers - what would be an appropriate number for a month or two, if the goal is to practice at least an hour a week?

As a general rule of thumb, we estimate that 1 sticker earned = 3 math problems solved.

1 sticker earned also = 30 seconds. So, if you wanted them to play for one hour, they should be earning about 120 stickers. 120 x 4 = 480 for a whole month.

(Keep in mind these are averages based on "easier" and "harder" activities.)
