How can I help my students practice for our local 24 Challenge tournament? I think some schools teach kids to memorize the cards.

Some players are so quick, it does seem as though they may have memorized the cards! However, memorizing the cards will not really help—learning the PATTERNS that make 24 will be your students' key to success.
Encourage students to think of the patterns that make 24. As a classroom activity, have each student in the class give one pattern that makes 24. Or, choose a number, 1 through 24, and write it on the board. Have students find all the ways to make 24 with the number chosen.
